This course explores the concept and practice of alternative and mainstream cinema, focusing on films and movements that challenge mainstream conventions in narrative, form, and ideology. Through a diverse range of screenings, readings, and discussions, students will examine how alternative and mainstream cinema provide a platform for (marginalized) voices, experiments with narrative and visual styles, and critiques dominant cultural norms. The course will also consider the historical, social, and technological contexts that have shaped cinematic practices and will help the students to read films.
