This course will explore the major ethical issues confronting the practices of medicine and physiotherapy and rehabilitation. From the question of how ethical principles apply to the delivery of healthcare to the very recent debate on emerging technologies in medicine and the future of health profession, this course spans some of the most important ethical and social questions of our time: Could an embryo be called a person? Is there any moral difference between active and passive euthanasia? Should we accept organ donation from children? Should physicians always tell the truth to the patients? Does physiotherapy raise novel ethical problems unlike other areas of medicine? In this course, we will become familiar with ethical and legal positions, consider and debate opposing arguments on the various topics, and examine relevant case studies. We are not merely interested in what certain people believe, but also, and more to the point, whether the reasons they give for their beliefs are good ones. Class sessions consist primarily of lectures and discussion activities.

The course introduces fundamental elements that form the foundation of various conceptualizations of “The Metaverse”. Topics to be presented and discussed include shared spatialization, digital mediation of reality, socialization, and assigning value to digital objects. The course will devote significant time to discussions of ethics and the impacts that digitization will have on non-digital aspects of society. Students will be required to research and write several essays throughout the course and design a metaverse scenario as a final group project. Online class sessions will frequently take place inside of 2D and 3D “metaverse platforms”. Students will be expected to know how to use their keyboard and mouse/touchpad to navigate these spaces and to use their microphone effectively. This is not a course focused on cryptographic topics.
