This course examines representations of race, class, gender, and sexual identity in the media. In the course, the students will be considering issues of authorship, spectatorship, audience and the ways in which various media content (film, television, print journalism, advertising) enables, facilitates, and challenges these social constructions in society. Moreover, the students will examine how gender and race affects the production of media and discuss the impact of new media and digital media and how it has transformed access and participation, moving contemporary media users from a traditional position of readers to writers and/or commentators. Students will analyze gendered language and embodiment as it is produced online in blogs and vlogs, avatars, and in the construction of cyberidentities. The course provides an introduction to feminist approaches to media studies by drawing from work in feminist film theory, journalism, cultural studies, gender and politics, and cyberfeminism.

This course provides an overview of the use of film and video as an artistic medium. It covers video art as part of a larger context of "moving images" and their incorporation into creative work that is neither defined as cinema, nor documentary, nor short or experimental film. It will introduce the students early examples of video art as practiced by conceptual artists of the 1960s and 1970s, followed by contemporary use of video and film in the art context. Students will learn theoretical aspects of moving images and experiment with applying these ideas into actual moving image works. The course introduces fundamental elements that form the foundation of various conceptualizations of “The Metaverse”. Topics to be presented and discussed include shared spatialization, digital mediation of reality, socialization, and assigning value to digital objects. The course will devote significant time to discussions of ethics and the impacts that digitization will have on non-digital aspects of society. Students will be required to research and write several essays throughout the course and design a metaverse scenario as a final group project. Online class sessions will frequently take place inside of 2D and 3D “metaverse platforms”. Students will be expected to know how to use their keyboard and mouse/touchpad to navigate these spaces and to use their microphone effectively. This is not a course focused on cryptographic topics. Blockchains, cryptocurrencies, and NFTs will not be the focus of the course, although these subjects will be included in discussions of metaverse economics and concepts of ownership.
