About the Lecture

This lecture will explore emerging global trends in cultural heritage management, with a special focus on the ICOMOS International Charter on Intangible Cultural Heritage. The presentation will discuss how this charter guides heritage professionals in working collaboratively with local communities, respecting their values, knowledge systems, and cultural practices.

 

About the Speaker

Prof. Dr. Angel Cabeza Monteira is an Archaeologist (University of Chile) and holds a PhD in Architecture and Heritage from the University of Seville, Spain. https://angelcabeza.cl/  

He has been a member of ICOMOS Chile for 30 years and is a founding member of the ICOMOS International Committee on Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICICH). He has served twice as Vice‑President of ICICH and is currently the President of the ICICH Committee.

Prof. Cabeza has held numerous high‑level positions in Chile, including:

  • Coordinator of Heritage and Environmental Education for Chile's National Parks
  • Executive Secretary of the National Monuments Council
  • National Director of the Heritage Service
  • Director of the National Library
  • Executive Vice‑President of the National Monuments Council of Chile

He coordinated the presentation of Chile's Tentative List of World Heritage, successfully managed the inscription of five UNESCO World Heritage sites in Chile, and served as Chile's delegate to the UNESCO World Heritage Committee. He also worked as Heritage Director for the Municipalities of Providencia and Santiago de Chile.

Prof. Cabeza has been a consultant for ICOMOS and the Getty Conservation Institute, and has worked on numerous national and international heritage projects. He has lectured at universities in Chile, Argentina, and Spain, and is the author of various articles and books on heritage.

During his tenure at the National Monuments Council, he proposed the creation of Chile's National Heritage Day, and has received several national and international recognitions.

His professional work and personal interests focus on the recognition and appreciation of heritage in all its diversity, strengthening the link between heritage and local communities, promoting respect for human rights, and improving public policies and institutions for a better understanding of natural and cultural heritage.
