Our university has achieved a significant milestone in the commercialization of research outputs and the strengthening of university–industry collaboration. At the launch event held on 19 December 2025 at our Vadi Campus, six patents developed in the fields of digital transformation, pharmacology, and health technologies were licensed to five different companies.
University–Industry Collaboration as the Cornerstone of Sustained Success
As part of the first patent licensing activities since the establishment of the university, six patents were successfully licensed to five companies. Delivering the opening remarks, our Rector, Prof. Dr. Erkan İbiş, drew attention to the university’s recent momentum of development. Prof. Dr. İbiş stated:
“At Istinye University, we regard university–industry collaboration as a strategic priority. These first patent licensing agreements represent a significant indicator of our university’s rising academic and research trajectory. Ensuring that the knowledge we generate finds practical application is one of the fundamental elements strengthening our research mission.”
A Turning Point on the Path to Economic Value Creation
Our Vice Rector, Prof. Dr. Bestami Özkaya, emphasized the university’s expanding patent portfolio and its strong focus on commercialization, stating:
“Our patent portfolio has shown significant progress in terms of both quality and impact in recent years. This licensing activity is among the most important initiatives undertaken at Istinye University to date and represents a critical turning point in transforming research outputs into economic value.”
Intellectual Property as the Key to Sustainable Value Creation
During the opening session, our Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Muharrem Usta, highlighted the role of intellectual property in today’s knowledge-based economy, noting:
“Intellectual property is not only about safeguarding academic production but also constitutes a fundamental pillar of sustainable value creation. The commercialization of knowledge generated at universities holds strategic importance for economic and societal development.”
Commercialized Academic Knowledge Contributes to the National Economy
Among the distinguished guests at the launch event, the President of the Turkish Patent and Trademark Office, Prof. Dr. M. Zeki Durak, underlined Türkiye’s recent national and international achievements in the field of industrial property, the critical role of intellectual property rights in economic value creation, and the commercialization journey of patents. Prof. Dr. Durak emphasized that the effective commercialization of knowledge produced at universities through robust mechanisms is of vital importance for strengthening the national economy and ensuring the sustainability of the innovation ecosystem.
Looking ahead, our university aims to continue its efforts with determination to enhance patent commercialization activities and to support the integration of research outputs with industry, particularly in strategic areas such as digital transformation, pharmacology, and health technologies. These licensing agreements stand out as tangible outcomes of Istinye University’s innovation-driven, entrepreneurial, and impact-oriented research approach, contributing to the transformation of academic knowledge into societal and economic value through collaboration with industry.
