One of the most unpleasant aspects of summer is dealing with mosquito bites. While some bites only result in slight redness and swelling, others can cause persistent itching. But can mosquito bites be dangerous? And why do some bites not heal? Prof. Dr. Mahir İğde, a faculty member in Pediatric Immunology and Allergy Diseases at Istinye University (ISU), answers these questions.

1. Why Does Itching Occur After a Mosquito Bite?

Mosquitoes draw blood by inserting a thin proboscis (a needle-like structure) into human skin. During this process, they inject an anticoagulant substance that prevents blood clotting. In response, the body releases histamine, which results in symptoms such as redness, itching, and swelling.

2.  What Are the Symptoms of a Mosquito Bite?

Mosquito bites typically appear as itchy, red, and slightly raised bumps. These swellings generally become noticeable immediately after the bite and peak within a few hours.

3.  What Precautions Can We Take Against Mosquitoes?

To protect against mosquito bites, wear long-sleeved clothing, choose light-colored attire, use mosquito repellents, and avoid areas with high mosquito activity. Additionally, you can prevent mosquitoes from entering your home by installing mosquito screens on doors and windows.

4. What Quick Measures Can Relieve Itching and Swelling?

To alleviate itching and swelling, apply cold compresses or use antihistamine creams. Avoid scratching the area to prevent further irritation and reduce the risk of infection.

5. Are There Differences Between Mosquito Species and Their Bites?

Yes, certain mosquito species can cause more discomfort than others. For instance, Aedes mosquitoes exhibit particularly aggressive biting behavior, which can lead to larger and itchier bumps.

6. Why Do Some Mosquito Bites Take Longer to Heal?

Most mosquito bites heal within a few days. However, individuals with sensitive immune systems may experience longer healing times. Additionally, if an infection develops in the affected area, recovery may be prolonged.

7. Are Mosquito Bites Dangerous? Is There a Risk of Disease?

Some mosquito species can transmit serious diseases, including malaria, Zika virus, and dengue fever. Therefore, it is essential to take precautions to prevent bites.

8. What Are the Symptoms of a Mosquito Bite Infection?

Signs of infection may include excessive redness, inflammation, severe pain, or fever at the bite site. If you experience these symptoms, it is advisable to contact a healthcare professional.

9. What Is the Treatment Process for Mosquito Bites?

Most mosquito bites can be treated at home. Applying cold compresses and antihistamine creams is usually sufficient to relieve itching. However, if an infection occurs, antibiotic treatment may be necessary.

10. Why Is It Important to Protect Yourself from Mosquito Bites?

Protecting yourself from mosquito bites is crucial for preventing diseases. Simple precautions can help you avoid this unpleasant situation.
