With the recent blocking of access to Instagram, Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) have become a topic of interest. Many users seeking access to Instagram have turned to VPNs, raising questions about their safety and legality. Is using a VPN safe? Are there any risks associated with it? Is it considered illegal? To address these concerns, Assoc. Prof. Reza Kalan from the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences at Istinye University (ISU) provided insights.
VPN Provides Secure Communication
Assoc. Prof. Kalan explains that a VPN, or Virtual Private Network, protects users by encrypting their data and masking their IP addresses. This protection helps users bypass firewalls, enhancing privacy and autonomy by concealing their browsing activity, identity, and location. "VPNs ensure secure communication through encryption," he stated.
The Risks of Free VPN Tools
While a VPN can offer some protection against viruses and malware, it is not foolproof. "Free VPNs often contain malware that can harm your system or compromise your data," Kalan cautioned. He emphasized that while VPN usage is legal in most countries, including the US, Canada, and many European nations, free VPN services can pose significant security risks. "Many free VPNs may harbor malware that cybercriminals can exploit to steal users' data or gain unauthorized access to their devices."
A Secure VPN Can Protect Against Unauthorized Access
When asked about the implications of always keeping a VPN active, Kalan noted, "A secure VPN can safeguard against unauthorized access. However, the crucial question is how to trust VPN providers. Therefore, it is advisable to avoid using unknown VPNs and to limit VPN use to necessary situations." He also discussed the legal aspects of VPN usage, stating, "Using a VPN is legal in most countries, including the US, Canada, and Europe, where reputable VPN companies operate. However, in some countries, such as Iran, VPN usage is illegal and prohibited, yet many people still use them."

The Difference Between DNS and VPN
Kalan also highlighted the key differences between DNS and VPN. He explained, "DNS does not employ an encryption algorithm, meaning data is transmitted in plain text. In contrast, a VPN encrypts data before sending it over the network, allowing it to bypass any filters. Since the content of the data transmitted through a VPN is obscured, filtering popular VPN sites or applications is often the first step taken to prevent users from accessing them."
DNS is Not Designed with Security in Mind
Kalan provided insights into the reliability of DNS addresses circulating on the internet, stating, "DNS is not designed with security in mind. While DNS services like Google, OpenDNS, and Cloudflare offer free solutions, these providers often include basic security features such as anti-phishing protection and some level of content filtering. However, every transaction we make on the internet can ultimately be intercepted by the service provider, and it’s important to remember that every service has a cost. As the saying goes, 'Free cheese can only be found in a mousetrap.'"
