Tuğba Toz Akalın, 1980 yılında Muğla'da doğmuştur. Hacettepe Üniversitesi Diş Hekimliği Fakültesi mezuniyetinin ardından aynı üniversitede Sağlık Bilimleri Enstitüsü'nde doktora ve uzmanlık programını 2011 yılında başarıyla tamamlamıştır. Akademik kariyerine Ekim 2011'de yardımcı doçent olarak İstanbul Medipol Üniversitesi'nde devam eden Tuğba Toz Akalın, 2017 yılında doçentlik ünvanını almıştır. Bahçeşehir Üniversitesi Diş hekimliği Fakültesinin kuruşunda 2020-2023 yılları arasında görev almıştır ve bu süreçte profesörlük ünvanına hak kazanmıştır. Akalın'ın araştırma ve öğretim faaliyetleri, adeziv restorasyonlar, minimal invaziv diş hekimliği, diş hekimliğinde koruyucu uygulamalar, dental lazer uygulamaları ve estetik dental uygulamalarıdır.
