About the Lecture:
Ms. Filatova will deliver a presentation focused on the unique timber building traditions of the Russian North. She will explore their distinct architectural features and the complex challenges involved in preserving authentic wooden structures.
The lecture will be illustrated through two case studies of UNESCO World Heritage Sites:
- Kizhi Pogost – An open-air museum reserve on Lake Onega, renowned for its two 18th-century wooden churches and an octagonal clock tower, built without nails. This site is a masterful example of historic carpentry skills in harmony with the landscape.
- Cultural Landscape of Kenozero Lake – A national park and specially protected natural area, which integrates traditional villages, historic land use patterns, and living cultural practices within its forest and lake setting.
About the Speaker:
Nadezhda Vladimirovna FILATOVA is a distinguished expert in heritage conservation and currently serves as Vice-President of ICOMOS Russia. Her work focuses on the protection and management of cultural landscapes and historic timber architecture.
