As part of its "The Chat is Fantastic" ("Sohbet Şahane") event series, the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences hosted Dr. Ali Suat Ürgüplü at the Vadi Campus for a talk titled "Who Wins the Nobel: the Author, the Editor, or the Translator?"
During the event, Dr. Ürgüplü discussed in detail the stages a manuscript undergoes after reaching an editor, how its publishability is assessed, and the critical role the editor plays throughout this process. Addressing common challenges in literary translation, he emphasized the importance of fidelity, noting that arbitrary additions to the text can compromise the integrity and reliability of a work.
The talk, which drew considerable interest from academics and students, shed light on the inner workings of the publishing world and offered valuable insights into editorial and translation processes.
At the conclusion of the event, Dr. Ürgüplü was presented with a certificate of appreciation by Prof. Dr. Işıl Baş Oliveira, Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the eighth volume of A Guide to Ottoman Poetry by Prof. Dr. Ahmet Atillâ Şentürk, faculty member in the Department of Turkish Language and Literature.
