Istinye University Secretary-General Burak KILANÇ evaluated the 2018 YKS (Yükseköğretim Kurumları Sınavı – University Entrance Exam) placement report published by YÖK (Yükseköğretim Kurumu – The Council of Higher Education). The report was prepared based on the data of 2.381.412 candidates who applied to the 2018 YKS, and 857.232 candidates who are placed in a university.

“It is vital for government institutions to share their data”

Burak KILANÇ emphasized YÖK’s contribution to preventing data dictatorship. “This study is a very important example of sharing the data with other parties for further studies after making them relevant and useful.” He said. After pointing out the possibility that the report can be used for many parties and institutions, Burak KILANÇ highlighted the importance of data sharing by saying “In international literature, there is a concept called “data dictatorship”, meaning that an available data is not shared with other parties. In my opinion, this study of YÖK is a very important example of sharing the data with the related parties for further studies after it has been processed and made useful.”

“Thousands of statistics may be derived from the report.”

Burak Kılanç mentioned that the work is city and region-based YKS Atlas. He underlined the importance of the work’s positive results with his words “In the report, as well as how many people took the exam in Mediterranean Region and how many people passed or couldn’t pass the threshold grade, one can also find the number of test takers who are placed in a university. Governships, local governments, private sector representatives, educators and researchers will have the chance to make use of this. From the report, many different and interesting statistics may come out. We have been observing the global outstanding improvements in data collecting, data processing and artificial intelligence thanks to recent significant developments in information technology.”
