The 10th Anniversary of the Discovery of the Higgs Boson

It has been 10 years since the first hints of a particle that resembles the Higgs Boson was discovered at ATLAS and CMS, the two big experiments of CERN’s Large Hadron Collider. The discovery of the Higgs Boson resolves the long sought search for almost half a century to understand the mechanism of how fundamental particles gain mass. Physicist from Türkiye were also part of this study, including academics who continue their career at İstinye University.

Professor Serkant Ali Çetin, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences and Chair of the Department of Basic Sciences of İSU, together with Professor Sertaç Öztürk and Associate Professor Andrew Beddall of İSU Department of Basic Sciences were among the authors of this discovery published in July 2012 and have contributed to this global scientific effort. Currently, the High Energy and Particle Physics Research Group of ISU consists of five faculty members and two postdoctoral researches who conduct various research in international collaborations such as CERN-ATLAS, CERN-CAST, CERN-FCC, BNL-srEDM and CAS-BESIII. The group continues its planned growth with the aim of realizing a feed to the science and technology culture of our country via advanced technologies triggered by basic research.

Discovery of the Higgs Boson was among the important milestones of this most comprehensive world-wide scientific effort that had been proposed in 1980’s while having a calendar till 2040 with decades of preparation, data taking and analysis. One year after the discovery of the Higgs Boson, The Nobel Prize in Physics was awarded to physicists who had theoretically predicted the discovery.
